On this Saturday

Hey there! Currently I'm getting ready to head to downtown Philly to shoot on this lovely clear day. I know I haven't posted much craft stuff lately but let me reassure you it's coming! Here, I'll show you a sneak peak of it.

The weather here has been kind of stormy on and off. Example A:

That's the front of my college. I ran out in between downpours.

This morning I finished my resume so I can start applying for an internship this summer!

Anyways I'm off to shoot!

Getting Back Into Graphic Design

(I made this solely out of text freshman year of college)

I'm a multimedia communications student. I take classes in video production, photography, web design, audio techniques, and graphic design. I like all these facets of my major (well, audio isn't really one of my strongest points). However, along the way of taking all these classes, I've kind of forgotten my first love: graphic design.

I'm not saying graphic design is my strongest skill, but it's what I've been doing since I was 14 years old. I consider photography to probably be my strongest of the 5 facets right now, and although I've been taking pictures since I was ten, I was only taking pictures to document what was happening around me, nothing really creative. But anyways, back to graphic design.

From the moment I got my first laptop, I was designing logos, backgrounds, pictures, pretty much anything my imagination came up with. At first I used the oh so lovely program Paint (it was all I had then) and then I upgraded to Photoshop. Sometimes I would forget to do homework because I was so engrossed in it. I even entered a graphic into a National Fine Arts Festival competition and got a college scholarship out of it.

I was going to go to school in Ohio and major in graphic design and then I started hearing about this program at a college in Pennsylvania that had a major that incorporated all sorts of media and since I had just started getting into photography my senior year of high school, this seemed like a pretty cool idea and I was excited to try out other forms of digital art.

I started getting caught up in all things photography and video related; getting my first DSLR, getting Apple certified in video editing software, running cameras at conventions, etc. Then I stepped into my Design & Visual Language class this semester. While this class isn't solely dedicated to graphic design, it rekindled my love for it. If I'm completely honest, it rekindled my love for designing and creating in general.

Our first project was to redo a horribly designed ad. We were told to tear it apart and start afresh. Using photoshop for projects other than editing photos was something I had to re-teach myself. But, it's just like a bicycle, you never forget it.

My skills are a bit rusty, but I really like my project. The ad I re-did had no name and I wanted to keep it that way so that I could focus on the design and not focus on thinking up a good name for it.

This is my re-vamped ad. Please note the phone number is not a real number. =]

First Shoot in a While

Lately I have been so busy with my all my media classes that I have had almost no time to create anything not school related! I figured I would share a few photos from a photoshoot I did earlier this week. It's the only thing I've done not school related all week! These were for a friend's acting portfolio.

If you want to see the rest of the set, they are on my photography blog.

Enjoy!

Fabric Book Cover

This year one of my new things I'm trying is keeping a planner with me at all times. I bought a very boring an small one from Michaels for like a dollar and I decided I wanted to spruce it up and make it cute.

I cut a large square around the book so there was enough fabric to fold over the insides.

Out of that square I cut this H shape (sort of) so there wasn't extra fabric to be folded in.

Then I started folding the top flaps in and gluing them into place.

And the sides.

On the front side, before I folded the flaps in, I sewed the flowers on. My friend gave me these crocheted flowers she found at a store. So cute!

Then I just folded the rest in!

And part of me made it in this post. haha

How was your weekend everyone?

A Headband That Buttons

Hello!

Here's the deal: I like headbands. But I don't always want a headband that you have to tie or stretch around your head. So I decided to try something different and make a headband that buttons in the back!

I used two different types of ribbon, a black velvet-ish one and a strip of lace.

After sewing them together, I sewed a button on the end of one side, and loop of ribbon on the other side.

Simple as that! Here's a shot of the front and back.

Now it's off to enjoy my weekend. =]

Crocheted Slippers

Hello! Hope you all had a great weekend! I'm using my day off to relax and to bum around the apartment.

Before I show you the craft I did last week, (I know, I'm behind!) I wanted to show you a couple things I did this weekend.

I made this apple cake with my cousin. And I also bought the cutest dress from H&M.

(photo credit goes to each link)

 Now back to the craft!

I decided to try my hand at making slippers by crocheting them. I had no pattern and was just going off the top of my head.

I knitted two rectangles about the height and width of the bottom of my foot. Then I knitted two really long rectangles for the sides of the slippers. I made them long enough to wrap around the entire bottom rectangle. Then I crocheted two toe pieces. After each row of the toe pieces I would skip chain one less until it was the shape I wanted it to be.

After all the pieces were crocheted, I took the long rectangle and sewed it to the other rectangle. Then I sewed on the toe piece and started weaving a piece of elastic through the sides so that the slippers would stay on my feet.

Here are my gorgeous (sarcasm) feet. haha but anyways there they are! I might play around with the pattern and adjust to make them better, but here's the first try. =]

Did anyone do anything interesting this weekend?

Lace Mittens

I got these super cute mittens/fingerless gloves and since I have an addiction to lace, I couldn't help myself and put lace on these. =] It's really quite a problem. I've bought and been given so much lace that I just put it on everything and keep buying more.

Anywho, here is what I did! It's quite simple really. I just sewed lace on the part that folds over.

I have two views to show you what they look like open and closed.

Here's the before:

And now the after:

And a few shots of them in my hands. I did one open and one closed to show you.

Me again.

P.s. This was the first time I'd straightened my hair since December 12th. And it's now the middle of January.

P.s.s. I did get a haircut. Slightly bitter about how much came off, but oh well....

And I promise to respond to the posts I was tagged in soon!

Book Page Flower

Two posts ago I had a picture of paper flowers I had made for my kitchen and someone asked me to do a tutorial for them so here it is! =]

It literally took me five minutes to make this flower. That's how easy it is!

P.S. I was tagged in a couple blog posts to answer some questions and I'll do that next post! =]

You just need a stick, a couple book pages, scissors, and glue.

I crinkled and smashed up the pages for a while so that they weren't so stiff and to give them some texture.

Then I cut out petals in the shape of hearts (kinda).

I glued two together and cut another single (not heart) petal so there were five base petals.

Then I just kept cutting smaller and smaller hearts; glueing in each layer at a time.

Then when I've made three or four layers of petals, I crinkle just a tiny scrap of paper into a ball and glue it in the center.

When the flower is done I cut a rectangle of paper out, glued the stick on to the back, and glued the piece of paper over the stick.

Here's the one I made today and the one from the other post in my kitchen.
